AI in Trophy Design
AI can be an incredibly powerful tool. It speeds up processes and can help manage data, as well as being a useful asset for communication.
But when it comes to design, AI takes on a more complex role.
On one hand, it can be a fantastic way for clients to put together an idea of what they want their trophy to be.
On the other hand, it often produces results that are unsuitable, unrealistic, or look just like other designs.
So when can AI help you in creating a bespoke trophy, and how can it become a hindrance? We’ll take you through all the pros and cons of AI for designing trophies and awards.
The pros and cons of AI in trophy design
While there are many benefits to using AI, it’s also important to understand the areas where it can be more problematic. Here’s a quick breakdown of the main issues you’ll come across if you want to use AI to design awards.
Cost
You might believe that an AI design is going to save you money. After all – you’ve already handled the design bit, right? But actually, it can work out a lot more expensive than a professional, human designer.
For a start, many trophy design agencies provide free initial designs (EFX included!), as it’s all part of their service.
But of course, we also provide the materials, manufacturing, engraving – not to mention presentation boxes and delivery. If you’re using an AI design, you’re going to need to source all of those yourself, and you may find it’s a lot more expensive.
Even if you direct AI to create a design that will be within a certain budget – it’s highly unlikely to be able to do that with any accuracy.
Very few trophy designers display the costs of bespoke trophies on their websites, as they’re all unique. However, many do have off the shelf, or pre-designed trophies available with pricing.
So when AI is looking for the price of making a trophy, it’s highly likely to quote you an off-the-shelf price for a bespoke product. And without understanding the costs of manufacturing or materials, you could find it’s massively underestimated what you would need.
Speed
One area where AI really does deliver is speed. Even if it takes a while and the right prompts to get exactly what you want.
But if that speed gets you a design that’s unachievable or outside your budget, you’re still going to need a human designer to create something usable. So bear in mind that the immediacy of seeing a design might not make up for the compromises you’ll need to make to create it in real life.

Creativity
AI works by taking information, and re-working it. That means it’s never able to truly create – it can only base its output on what’s already been input.
That really hampers its ability to create a unique design.
Not only that, but a human designer can give you options for your trophy that could change what you want, or show you possibilities that you’d never considered.
For example, they may suggest a different material for a lower cost but a similar finish, or changing a design element to create a different effect.
A professional award designer can expand on your ideas, and help you create something truly extraordinary. AI can only give you what you ask for, based on what other people have already done.
Knowledge
The real-world complexities of award design can’t really be understood by AI. It doesn’t know about manufacturing requirements, the complexities of different materials, finishes or types of production.
It’s very easy for AI to generate a design that simply can’t be created in reality – because it doesn’t have the knowledge that a professional trophy designer does.
Experience
Using AI even to create an idea for your designer to work from, can often turn a highly positive experience into a negative one.
Usually, clients come to their designer with ideas, and watch them bring it to life. It’s a creative, constructive process that clients rightly get really excited about.
With AI you’re coming with a set idea already in place, and almost every time, having to make compromises with it in order for it to be achievable. So instead of building something together, it may feel like your designer is limiting, or compromising your vision – even if that vision is unrealistic.
Do EFX use AI to design trophies?
In a word – no! While AI can be helpful for a non-designer to create ideas of how they might want their trophy to look, a professional trophy designer can always come up with something that is better.
That’s because they have a vast knowledge of the options available, from materials to manufacturing methods. They can create designs that are truly unique (rather than an AI, which can only learn from what already exists), and can work alongside you, making suggestions that you may not have thought of or considered.
At EFX, we’re incredibly proud of our designs and our designers, and we know that AI has a very long way to go before it can compare to what they do.

Can you manufacture my AI-designed trophy?
If you’re looking for someone to simply take your design and manufacture it, then I’m afraid that’s not us!
Most of the time AI designs need a lot of work and refinement before they can actually be made. That’s because it’s generating something that looks lovely in an image – rather than something that needs to be created in reality.
But if you’ve created an AI design as a starting point, to give your designers an idea of what it is you’re looking for, then we can absolutely work with you to create a trophy that takes into account all your needs, from materials and sustainability, to branding and budget.
Just be aware, if you are planning to use AI, it may come up with something you absolutely love on the page. But in reality it could easily be derivative, very difficult to manufacture, and most commonly – far outside your actual budget.
So if you’re thinking of using AI to create your trophy design, have a really good think about your needs, and your expectations, to make sure you end up with a positive experience and a unique award you absolutely love.
