On the 15th October Pilsner Urquell’s quest to find the International Master Bartender 2010 was fulfilled, and bar owner Lukáš Svoboda from the Czech Republic was announced as the winner of this year’s competition and worthy of becoming part of the legend of Pilsner Urquell.  The presentation venue was at the spectacular Žofín Palace in Prague, where this year’s winner was presented with a prize of 10,000 Euros and a magnificent crystal goblet, which EFX was commissioned to make, by Pilsner Urquell’s advertising agency The Bank. Ed Walsh, Account Director at The Bank was effusive in his praise of the trophy: “I can’t overstate how well the trophy went down!”

The design is a story in itself: the elaborate engraving on the base is inspired by the intricate stonework found on Pilsner Urquell’s brewery gates in Pilsen, whilst the bowl of the trophy tells of a ceremonial goblet presented to Emperor Franz Josef I, on his visit to the celebrated brewery in 1874, to taste the acclaimed, golden Pilsner beer.  The trophy is a key element of the promotional activity surrounding the competition, and captures the passion and pride, which goes into the event.

The first ever Asian Awards, celebrating the great and good, took place at The Grosvenor House Hotel, Park Lane, London on 26 October. Presented by Lord Sebastian Coe and attended by illustrious names including Nasser Hussain OBE, Gurinder Chadha, Deputy PM Nick Clegg and Christian Louboutin, the event was a collaboration between United Business Media and Indian businessman Paul Sagoo, in partnership with Lebara, and supported Save the Children raising over £100k on the night.

Special EFX was asked to design a suitably prestigious award, and created a solid aluminium trophy with turned base and pierced logo, which certainly impressed cricket’s superstar Sachin Tendulkar, who stole the show, picking up both the Outstanding Achievement in Sport award and the much coveted Lebara People’s Choice award, and, in his Sports award acceptance referred to it as, “this beautiful trophy”.

The new Studio Glass Collection from Special EFX takes the bespoke awards sector to a higher level. Artistically and creatively unique, each piece is hand-made and a work of art, and designed for those organisations seeking awards, both memorable and with lasting value.

Special EFX offers the ultimate in personal service, working closely with its creative glass studio to capture the essence of a clients’ brief.  A variety of specialised glass techniques create stunning effects: of particular interest, for recognition awards, is the sculpting of the molten glass into human forms, whilst the layering of colours through the glass gives each piece an intriguing, inner depth.  In fact, the options are infinite, with each piece taking its own journey.

Special EFX’s has just completed its first commission for ISS UK, one of the world’s largest facility service providers.  The company wanted to recognise the outstanding performance of its staff, with a personalised, unique piece of art, which would maintain its intrinsic value and worth. One of the deserving winners was David Field, Head of Procurement with ISS Facility Services, Healthcare who, speaking after the event, said: “The award was a total shock, but when I sat down to have a good look at it, I was amazed at how much detail and thought had gone into the design. It will be something that I will keep on display for a very long time”.

Cargo in Shoreditch, London, was the place to be October 11, if you were anyone looking to make your name in the music industry. The St Helier Music Crowns Awards are an online music talent concept, which attracts the cream of unsigned singer/songwriters, from the UK and Ireland, and the finals proved to be a spectacular night of live music, sponsored by the trendy cider brand St. Helier.

Winning one of the three awards for Pop, Urban or Rock, could prove to be a smart move, and an important step towards a recording deal. This year Leo LeVox from Birmingham (Urban), Maria Marcial from Manchester (Pop) and the unforgettably named Messiah from Edinburgh (Rock) were the ecstatic winners, and picked up on the night the impressive, solid aluminium and nickel plated, crown inspired trophies designed and made by EFX.

This November saw Humanscale’s 10th Annual Faces in the Wild event, which included a fund-raising on-line auction, in aid of WWF (World Wildlife Fund). Black + Blum, the acclaimed London design consultancy founded by Dan Black and Martin Blum, fêted for such iconic creations as the Flow wine rack and the Fruit Loop fruit bowl, created this charming piece for the auction.  Called “The Last Penguin”, EFX was pleased to contribute the aluminium for the sculpture, which raised $1600 on the day.
