What is the collective word for a set of British Comedy Awards? Perhaps ‘a giggle’ or, in the case of Miranda Hart who picked up a hat trick of accolades on Saturday evening (January 22nd 2011) at indigO2, ‘an embarrassment’ would be more fitting. Viewers happily cringed as she flirted outrageously with Simon Le Bon, who presented her with Best TV Comedy Actress and later eyed up David Tennant, who presented her with The People’s Choice Queen of Comedy Award. She happily hugged her three awards at the end of the evening – quite a feat, as Special EFX, designers and manufacturers of the stunning brushed and pierced aluminium and acrylic awards revealed they each weighed three kilograms.
Organiser Mike Bronson was thrilled with the awards, the design of which was kept a secret until they were presented on the night: “We’ve had a great reaction to our new look award which, if you’re lucky enough to be a winner tonight, you’ll realise weighs a ton! Ironically, unlike anyone in this industry, it’s ‘two-faced’… with the reverse side featuring the famous ‘Joker’ playing cards that have been symbol of the Comedy Awards for the past 20 years”. The design of the awards was the culmination of the organisers and Special EFX working together to create something truly unique and highly visual. Each one is made from pierced and brushed aluminium; the face is engraved and the lips and teeth colour printed, whilst blue and clear acrylic reveal a Union Jack on the front and the playing card Joker on the reverse. |
